“Nothing uplifts the soul so much and gives it wings and liberates it from the earth and releases it from the fetters of the body and makes it aspire after wisdom and deride all the cares of this life as concordant melody and rhythm-possessing sacred songs.”
~Saint John Chrysostom~
The St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church Choir is a dedicated group of parishioners, giving of their time and talents in music ministry. With the blessing of the priest, the choir guides the congregation in prayer through the singing and chanting of the rich and varied hymnography of the Orthodox Church. Toward this end, choir members not only strive to learn the music, but more importantly to convey the hymns effectively as leaders in the community.
While our church music originates from the Byzantine chant traditions, there are also choral settings of many ancient and newly-composed hymns which we sing. Much of the music has been arranged and translated into English by modern-day Orthodox hymnographers. These hymns and other responsorial music, for both typical and special/feast day services, are prepared by the choir during weekly rehearsals (see the St George calendar for days and times).
If you are interested in joining the Adult Choir, please email both Karen Burke (Choir Director) [email protected] and Fr. Joel Gillam [email protected].
