Toolkit for Spiritual Growth – A Practical Guide to Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving by Father Evan Armatas

Toolkit for Spiritual Growth – A Practical Guide to Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving is not a catechetical book or a book in Orthodox dogmas and doctrine, but it does answer the questions as to why we pray, fast, and give alms to the poor. In addition, it discusses and explains how we as members of the body of Christ pray, fast, and give alms as well as interact with others who do the same in and outside of church.

Although short, this book should be read a bit at a time so the reader can contemplate how we as faithful members of the body of Christ can pray for one another, contribute our fasting as a sacrifice to God and to our neighbors and how Almsgiving can help to alleviate suffering in our communities.   If you have been Orthodox for some time, this book could also be helpful as a “refresher” in basic spirituality.  The book explains the fundamentals of the three-legged stool of Orthodox practice - prayer, almsgiving, and fasting - in terms that everyone can understand and implement.
